Have a favorite novel? On the Road... I, Robot... War and Peace? (Ok maybe not War and Peace). Want to tell us how important it is? Then do a book review. These pieces are not academic treatments of literature, rather, they are springboards into a world of larger ideas, cultural resonances and compelling analogies. There is more flexibility for creative writers in this style of journalism than any other. Pitch me your favorite novel, or, if you are reading something interesting in class you can work directly with that. We want a book review every week if possible and we don't want to assign any reading you might dislike so it's up to you. Tell us why the Golden Compass is the best example of religious criticism around today. Tell us why The Unbearable Lightness of Being explains everything about modern relationships. Tell us why Harry Potter is the new Jesus. Just tell us... and begin with the text. 1000 - 1200 words.
